João Luís Machado dos Santos, born on the 10th of August, 1963.
Research Area: The research activities have been focused in the field of bioanalytical chemistry by combining new automated flow-based analytical techniques, new devices, equipment and systems for on-line and real-time sample processing with the sensing and signalling ability of nanomaterials, in particular semiconductor and carbon quantum dots. The research is aimed at the development of new methodologies for analysis of food, pharmaceutical, clinical and environmental samples. Development of automated systems for on-line sample pre-treatments, namely pre-concentration systems, dilution, dissolution, interference removal, multi-parametric analysis, etc. Chemiluminescence: development of analytical methodologies based on direct, indirect and time-resolved CL. Nanotechnology: nanomaterials, nanocrystals. Synthesis of CdTe quantum dots for luminescent measurements. Application of CdTe QD as fluorescent probes. Utilisation of CdTe as chemiluminescence sensitizers and as radical generators. Aqueous fast nanocrystal synthesis. Microwave synthesis of carbon dots. Quantum dots immobilization by sol-gel. Implementation of nanosensores and paper-based point-of-care tests and lateral flow tests. Chemometrics: development of chemometric methods for first-order and second-order data analysis and processing.
