About LAQV

The Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV) of the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE is the Portuguese Research Centre for Sustainable Chemistry, a leading contributor to scientific innovation and a key partner to promote a sustainable development of our society.

Created in 1996 by researchers from the NOVA University of Lisbon and the University of Porto, currently it spreads out from the two main portuguese metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto to integrate Aveiro, Coimbra, Évora and small sites all over the country.

LAQV embraces ca 1000 researchers (half of which are PhD holders), who are currently pushing the boundaries of Sustainable Chemistry and Chemical Engineering to provide sustainable and practical solutions for governments, industry, and the general public. LAQV research crosses the fields of Chemical Synthesis, Catalysis, Food Science & Technology, Natural Products, Analytical Methods, Intensification of Processes & Clean Technologies, Alternative Solvents and Smart Materials.

The vision of LAQV is for a world in which Sustainable Chemistry is used as a powerful and dynamic tool to tackle the societal, economic and environmental challenges of modern life, contributing to sustainable innovation and development.

 

Mission and goals

The mission of LAQV is to initiate, advance, and promote the principles of Sustainable Chemistry through a multiplicity of research, networking, training, and outreaching activities. For that, the thematic Lines of LAQV were aligned with the Research Agenda of the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SUSCHEM), the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Agenda, and the priorities of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. LAQV is focused on increasing the awareness of different stakeholders for the importance of Sustainable Chemistry.

LAQV aims to:

  • increase the international impact of research in Sustainable Chemistry;
  • ensure that more research outputs lead to economic and social outcomes, through co-operation with industrial partners and creation of spin-offs;
  • attract the best young researchers to be trained in the multiple topics supporting Sustainable Chemistry;
  • seek industrial partners focused on implementing clean technologies and processes;
  • assist stakeholders in making decisions on health and safety issues related to (bio)chemical products or processes through increased collaboration with regulatory bodies;
  • share the principles of Sustainable Chemistry and research outputs with the general public, governments, and industry, thereby increasing LAQV’s presence in the community.
