João Aires de Sousa was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1970. He studied chemistry at Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT/UNL), where he graduated in 1993, and obtained his Ph.D. (1997) in Organic Chemistry. After a postdoctoral period in Erlangen, Germany he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemistry at FCT/UNL in 2002. In 2010 JAS obtained the Habilitation. His main scientific interests include machine learning of chemical properties, automatic classification of enzymatic reactions, prediction of NMR spectra, and representation of molecular chirality. JAS has implemented Chemoinformatics modules at undergraduate and graduate levels since 2001. JAS is engaged in the implementation of active learning methodologies.
