Healthy&ValorFOOD, coordinated by Isabel Mafra, researcher of LAQV at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, was funded with 500,000€ by the North Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020).
Modern societies are increasingly becoming more prone to diseases related to unhealthy dietary habits. A balanced diet rich in all the essential nutrients and phytonutrients, such as carotenoids and phenolic compounds, is crucial to preserve or even improve human health and well-being. It is in this context that Healthy&ValorFOOD emerges.
Healthy&ValorFOOD is divided in two research lines – ProHealthFOOD and ValorFOOD. The first, as explained by Isabel Mafra, “focus on health-promoting compounds, their bioavailability and biological pathway involved in some chronic disease prevention. The second research line aims at improving food properties, authenticity and safety, as well as valorizing food by-products.”
“The whole concept of Healthy&ValorFOOD relies on the idea of promoting the health and life quality of the general population and the environment based on the improvement of the nutritional value, safety and sustainability of food.”, says Isabel Mafra. This way, Healthy&ValorFOOD will contribute to sustainable health and food systems, which is a key pillar of the European Green Deal and other societal priorities.
NORTE 2020 is a financial instrument intended to support regional development in North Portugal, which is part of the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement and of the current cycle of structural funds provided by the European Union.
